정재원 (1986년)는 뉴욕과 서울을 기반으로 작업하고 있는 대한민국 서울 출생의 회화, 설치미술, 사진, 영화 등 다양한 매체를 통해 인간 존재와 시공간의 관계를 탐구하는 대한민국의 현대 미술가이다. 
그의 작품은 철학적 깊이와 감각적 탐구가 결합된 독창적인 시각 언어를 지니고 있으며, 그가 다루는 소재는 인간과 자연, 시간성과 존재에 대한 근본적 질문을 담고 있다. 그의 작업은 회화, 조각, 설치, 사진, 영상 등 다양한 매체를 넘나든다. 정재원은 자연 재료와 도시적 질감, 시간성과 존재성에 대한 철학적 사유를 결합하여, 현대성과 인간 경험의 교차점을 탐구한다. 그는 전통적 매체의 물성과 현대적 감성의 경계를 해체하고, 사라지는 순간과 기억의 층위를 시각적 언어로 재구성하며, 시간과 공간의 흐름 속에서 개인성과 보편성의 교차를 성찰하고, 존재와 기억의 지층을 새로운 시각적 맥락으로 풀어낸다.

정재원은 서울 연세대학교 법과대학 법학과를 졸업 후, 미국 시카고 예술대학교 (School of the Art Institute of Chicago, SAIC) 순수 미술 학사 학위 (BFA), 미국 뉴욕의 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아트 (School of Visual Arts, SVA) 에서 순수 미술 석사 (MFA) 학위를 받았다.

뉴욕 맨하탄 Artifact 갤러리 (2019, 2021, 2022)와 한국 CICA Museum, 뉴욕 K&P Gallery (2024)에서 개인전을 개최 하였으며, 뉴욕 Van Der Plas Gallery, Lichtundfire Gallery, Ethan Cohen Gallery, K&P Gallery, STARTA ARTA Gallery, Brooklyn BWAC Gallery, Royal Society of American Art (RSOAA), SVA Chelsea Gallery 등 다수의 갤러리 및 미술관에서 그룹전, LA Art Show, Satellite Art show Miami 등의 아트페어에 참여해 작품을 선보이며 국제적으로 활발하게 활동중이다. 또한, 엘에이 국제 필름 어워드, 맨하탄 국제 영화제, 시카고 국제 단편 영화제, 베를린 국제 인디 영화제 뉴욕 한인 영화제 (KAFFNY), 피렌체 필름 코르티 영화제 등에서 작품상, 각본상 등을 수상하는 등 세계 각지에서 다수의 영화제 상을 수상하는 등 세계 각지에서 다수의 국제 영화제에 공식 초청 및 수상자로 선정 되기도 하였다.

정재원은 회화, 설치 및 조각의 미학적 가능성을 탐구하고, 시적인 이미지와 철학적이고 성찰적인 스토리텔링을 결합한 작가만의 사유와 정서를 회화 및 설치미술, 영상, 사진 등의 다양한 매체를 사용하여 독창적인 방식으로 표현하는 작업들을 하고 있다. 그녀의 작품은 시적인 이미지와 철학적 성찰을 결합하여, 인간 존재와 자연, 시간 사이의 복잡한 상호작용을 탐구한다 각 작품은 철학적 사유와 내면의 감정을 시각적으로 풀어내는 독창적인 여정을 담고 있으며, 이를 통해 관객에게 깊은 사유를 이끌어낸다.

정재원 작가는 특히 단색 추상 회화를 통해 순간의 미학과 시공간의 연속성을 탐구하는 작품을 선보인다. 그녀의 작업은 주로 숯, 돌, 나무와 같은 자연적 재료를 사용하며, 이러한 물질들이 지닌 고유의 물리성과 시간성을 시각적으로 드러내고 있다. 이러한 자연 재료와 인공적 기법의 결합을 통해 작가는 물질의 본질에 대한 질문을 던지며, 시간과 공간 속에 존재하는 인간의 본질을 성찰한다. 

그녀의 작품들은 하이데거와 들뢰즈 같은 철학자들의 사유와 맞닿아 있으며, 정재원은 작품 속에 철학적 스토리텔링을 자연스럽게 녹여내어 관객에게 인간과 자연, 물질과 비물질에 대한 사색을 유도한다. 그녀의 작품 속에서 시적이면서도 철학적인 내러티브는 관객들로 하여금 몰입감을 느끼게 하며, 현대 예술에서 시공간과 존재의 문제를 새롭게 조명한다.

작가의 블랙 모노크롬 작업은 현대 미술계에서 독창적이며 고유한 위치를 차지할 잠재력이 있다. 단순한 색채 탐구를 넘어, 물질성, 시간성, 철학적 사유, 시적 서사, 그리고 공간적 경험을 하나로 융합하는 심도 깊은 예술적 접근을 보여 주고 있다. 검정이라는 단일한 색을 통해 다층적 경험을 창출 하며, 재료 그 자체가 지닌 본질을 깊이 탐구하여 관객에게 시각적, 촉각적, 심리적 감각을 동시에 전달하는 능력을 가지고 있으며, 이는 단순한 형식 실험을 넘어 인간 존재와 환경의 복잡한 관계를 사유하는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 

또한, 정재원의 작업은 공간성을 효과적으로 활용하여 검정이라는 색을 하나의 건축적 구조로 전환하는 데 있어 탁월하다. 그녀의 설치 작품은 검정의 무게감과 깊이를 통해 도시와 자연, 인공과 자연의 경계를 탐구하며, 관객이 그 안에서 새로운 공간적 감각을 체험하게 한다. 이는 단순히 회화나 조각을 넘어선 공간적 재구성을 가능하게 하며, 관객이 작품과 물리적, 감각적으로 상호작용할 수 있는 환경을 제공한다. 이러한 공간적 접근은 다른 미술가들과 차별화되는 강점이다.

Jae Won Jung (b. 1986, Seoul) is a South Korean contemporary artist working between New York and Seoul. Her multidisciplinary practice spans painting, installation, sculpture, photography, and film, exploring the ontological dimensions of human existence and its relationship to temporality and spatiality. Combining philosophical inquiry with sensory investigation, Jung constructs a distinct visual language that questions the nature of being, memory, and the tension between the natural and the artificial. Her work traverses media, pushing the boundaries between traditional and contemporary methods, and invites viewers into a meditative space where poetic imagery and philosophical storytelling unfold.

Jung holds a Bachelor of Laws from Yonsei University in Seoul, a BFA in Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), and an MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York. She has presented solo exhibitions at Artifact Gallery in Manhattan (2019, 2021, 2022), CICA Museum in Korea, and K&P Gallery in New York (2024), and has participated in numerous international group exhibitions and art fairs including at Van Der Plas Gallery, Lichtundfire, Ethan Cohen Gallery, STARTA ARTA Gallery, BWAC, RSOAA, and SVA Chelsea Gallery. Her work has been showcased at major art fairs such as LA Art Show and Satellite Art Show in Miami.

In parallel with her visual art practice, Jung has also received international recognition as a filmmaker, winning multiple awards in categories such as Best Screenplay and Best Direction at the LA International Film Awards, Manhattan International Film Festival, Chicago International Short Film Festival, Berlin Indie Film Festival, KAFFNY (Korean American Film Festival New York), and the Florence Corti Film Festival.

Jae Won Jung’s work is grounded in a profound engagement with philosophical aesthetics, particularly influenced by the thinking of Heidegger and Deleuze. Her artistic language dissolves the boundaries between medium and meaning, combining poetic imagery with philosophical narratives that interrogate time, space, memory, and being. Whether through black monochromatic painting, sculptural installations, or meditative video works, Jung constructs a unique syntax of reflection and sensation.

Her monochromatic black paintings in particular represent a striking intersection of abstraction, materiality, and existential inquiry. Utilizing natural materials such as charcoal, wood, and stone, Jung investigates the physical properties of her media while exploring the metaphysical density of time embedded in matter. These materials, marked by geological and historical duration, become vessels for reflecting on temporality and mortality. Her process embodies a repetitive, layered gesture that echoes the rhythm of disappearance, accumulation, and presence.

Jung’s work consistently engages with the spatial and ontological weight of black—treating black not as void but as an architectural density, a surface of memory, and a site of condensation. In doing so, she shifts black from a chromatic choice to a structural force. Her installations expand the language of painting into architectural environments, enabling black to function as a spatial framework that collapses boundaries between urban and natural, physical and immaterial.

Through her innovative fusion of painting, sculpture, and installation, Jae Won Jung’s art offers a deeply resonant reflection on the intersection of human experience and material reality. Her work challenges traditional forms while offering new frameworks to perceive time, memory, and being—not as abstract ideas but as embedded forces that dwell in the very texture of matter.

<Interlocked Syntax>는 선이 공간의 언어처럼 작용하는 구조적 회화이다. 각 선은 서로를 교차하고 얽히며, 화면 위에 고요한 긴장감을 만들어낸다. 회화는 재현이 아니라 발화이며, 겹쳐진 블랙의 획과 여백은 침묵 속 문장을 구성한다.
이 작업은 존재와 부재, 형태와 침묵 사이에서 생성되는 감각의 문법을 탐구한다. 선의 리듬 속에서, 회화는 말 없이 사유하는 하나의 건축이 된다.

이 작업에서 선은 단순한 조형 요소를 넘어, 서로를 교차하고 얽히며 침묵 속에서 구축되는 하나의 질서를 만들어낸다.
검은 선들의 긴장은 화면 위에 비어 있는 여백과 충돌하며, 말해지지 않은 것들이 놓일 자리를 암시한다.
나는 선을 통해 언어 이전의 구조, 혹은 언어를 초과하는 감각적 문법을 탐구한다. 
회화는 하나의 공간적 언어로 기능하며, 시각적으로 체감되는 건축적 질서를 만들어낸다.
겹쳐진 선들의 층위와 간극은 마치 목소리 없는 문장이자, 의미의 잔향처럼 화면 속에 머문다.
비어 있는 것과 채워진 것, 연결된 것과 단절된 것 사이에서 의미는 생성되고 사라진다.
이 회화는 말하지 않지만, 말해지는 구조를 지닌다. 그리고 그 침묵은 오히려 가장 깊은 울림으로 다가온다.

<Interlocked Syntax> is a structural painting where lines act as the language of space.
Each stroke overlaps and entangles, creating a quiet tension across the surface.
Rather than depicting, the work articulates—composing silent sentences through black marks and voids.
It explores a grammar of perception that emerges between presence and absence, form and silence.
Through the rhythm of lines, painting becomes an architecture of thought beyond words.

In this work, the lines go beyond form—they intersect and entangle to construct a quiet, yet resolute order.
Each black stroke exists in tension with the surrounding void, inviting what is unspoken to emerge.
Through this process, I explore a grammar that precedes language—or perhaps exceeds it.
Painting becomes a spatial mode of expression, offering an architectural rhythm that is felt rather than read.
The layered lines and subtle gaps behave like silent sentences, reverberating with residual meaning.
Between what is connected and what is broken, filled and unfilled, a fragile sense of presence arises.
This is a structure that does not speak in words, yet speaks profoundly.
It is within this interlocked silence that the most resonant voices are often found.


Interlocked Syntax

<Provisional Lines>은 고정되지 않은 구조, 유예된 선들이 만들어내는 임시적 공간에 대한 탐구이다. 

선은 구축의 단위이자 사유의 흔적이며, 완성되지 않은 틀 속에서 끊임없이 방향을 모색한다. 공간은 고정된 대상이 아니라 생성 중인 상태로, 비결정성과 긴장을 품고 있다.

<Provisional Lines>는 존재가 고정되기 이전, 구조가 완성되기 이전의 찰나에 대한 사유에서 출발한다. 이 선들은 단지 형식을 구획하는 도구가 아니라, 공간과 시간 사이를 가로지르며 생성과 소멸의 경계에 머문다. 

미완의 틀 속에서 선은 지지체가 되기를 유예하고, 사유는 형태가 되지 못한 채 부유한다.

This work explores a provisional space shaped by lines that remain unsettled and incomplete.
Lines function as both units of construction and traces of thought, constantly searching for orientation within an unfinished framework.
Space here is not a fixed entity but a state of becoming—imbued with indeterminacy and quiet tension.

Provisional Lines begins with a meditation on the moment before form settles—before structure crystallizes into permanence.
These lines are not merely tools of division, but gestures that traverse space and time, lingering at the threshold between emergence and dissolution.
Within an incomplete framework, the line defers its function as support, allowing thought to hover, unformed and unresolved.

<Latent Frame>은 구축되지 않은 구조가 이미 하나의 사유로서 존재할 수 있는지를 묻는다. 선은 공간을 지지하는 기둥 뿐만이 아니라, 구조 그 자체가 발생할 가능성의 윤곽이다. 건축은 완성된 형식이 아니라, 잠재된 틀을 통해 장소가 되어가는 과정이다.

이 여백은 비어있기보다, 아직-도달하지 않은 구조의 전위(前位)를 품고 있다.
이 작업은 보이지 않는 구조적 긴장 속에서, 시간과 공간이 태동하는 지점을 상상한다.

Latent Frame asks whether a structure can exist not through construction, but through thought.
The lines do not support space—they trace the possibility of structure yet to emerge.
Architecture here is not formal completion, but a process where latent grids become place.
This void holds not absence, but the pre-positional tension of what has yet to be realized.
The work imagines the threshold where time and space begin to stir within structural silence.

<Cross-section of Absence>는 더 이상 존재하지 않는 것들이 남긴 구조의 흔적을 들여다본다. 여기서 선은 벽이나 지지대가 아니라, 사라진 무엇인가의 잔재로 기능한다. 이 작업은 부재를 단순한 공허가 아닌, 공간을 윤곽 짓는 생성적 힘으로 해석한다. 건축 도면의 단면처럼 잘린 검은 형상들은 점유되었던 기억의 형식을 암시한다.
이 구조는 물질에서 비롯되지 않으며, 오히려 사라진 것의 침묵 속에서 부유한다.

Cross-section of Absence examines the structural imprint of what is no longer present.
Each line acts not as a wall or support, but as a remainder of something withdrawn.
The work treats absence not as emptiness, but as a generative force that contours space.
Like a sectioned void in architectural drawing, the black forms suggest a memory of occupation.
Here, structure does not arise from mass, but from the silent traces left behind.

<Untitled (III)>는 굵은 검은 붓질들이 흰 바탕 위에서 교차하며, 선의 본질과 조형적 잠재성을 탐구하는 작업이다.
형상, 서사, 색채를 모두 제거함으로써, 이 작품은 가장 근원적인 시각 언어인 ‘선’에 집중한다. 이를 통해 표현과 사유, 감각과 구조가 만나는 지점을 드러낸다. 본 작업은 추상 회화의 전통을 넘어, 선만으로 신체의 리듬과 내면의 움직임을 불러일으킨다.

This work transcends the conventions of abstract painting, invoking the rhythms of the body and the movements of the inner self through line alone.

The intersecting lines break away from symmetry and predictability, generating an unexpected tension that gradually reveals its own unique sense of order and balance. Each line behaves differently in direction, thickness, density, and speed, and their collisions and overlays create a visual density that saturates the entire composition. Erinnerung (Memory) is a photographic painting that deconstructs and reconstructs the theme of memory through abstract geometric composition. Rather than depicting a specific moment or scene, the piece engages with the photographic logic of delay, trace, and absence—where painting, like a photograph, captures not presence, but the residue of experience. The stark contrast of black and white, and the rhythmic arrangement of shapes, evoke not a narrative but a structure of sensation, where memory emerges as something non-linear, fragmented, and reconstituted through perception.

“Erinnerung” points not to a specific memory but to the act of remembering itself—its instability, its repetitions, and its erasures. The painting suggests that memory is not a static image from the past, but a process of visual and emotional resurfacing that happens in the present. In this way, the piece resonates with Vilém Flusser’s notion of the surface as the space where meaning flickers, rather than being buried in depth, and with Gilles Deleuze’s concept of repetition—not as sameness, but as difference unfolding across time. Die Kunst der Fuge is a painterly experiment inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s fugue form, aiming to visualize the principles of rhythm, structure, and repetition. Just as melodic lines in a fugue overlap and interact with one another, the geometric forms in this painting emerge independently yet resonate and respond visually, constructing a kind of visual counterpoint. The sharp contrast between black and white, along with the precise arrangement of each element, reflects the mathematical yet poetic order of the fugue, sensually presenting layers of time and space through repetition, variation, and inversion.

Rather than depicting music in a literal sense, this work seeks to translate the structural essence of music—the formation of form within time (Formgebung in der Zeit)—into a visual language. Drawing on Theodor W. Adorno’s reflections on the autonomy and structural necessity of music, the painting explores how auditory rhythm can be transformed into visual order. “Die Kunst der Fuge” ultimately functions as a philosophical construct, creating a tension and harmony between music and painting, time and space, structure and freedom.

<Zero Gravity>는 중력이라는 질서로부터 벗어난 공간을 상상하며, 물질이 어떻게 공간 속에서 새로운 존재 조건이 될 수 있는가를 묻는다.
석고 플라스터는 명확한 중량감을 가진 물성이지만, 이 작업에서는 지지 없이도 존재할 수 있는 비중심적 공간 개념을 품는다.

<East of Eden>은 잃어버린 낙원 이후, 신의 현존을 물질 안에서 감각하기 시작한 장소를 응시한다. 에덴의 동쪽은 하나님이 사라진 곳이 아니라, 말씀이 다시 울려 퍼지기를 기다리는 땅, 시간과 물질 안에서 존재가 기도처럼 형성되어가는 경계의 지층이다.

이 작업은 회화와 조각의 경계를 지우고, 검은 물성 속에 침잠한 신의 무게와 인간존재의 가능성을 드러낸다.

East of Eden turns to the place where, after the loss of paradise, the presence of God begins to be felt within matter.
East of Eden is not where God has vanished, but where the Word awaits to be heard again—
a layered threshold where being is shaped like a prayer through time and material.

작업은 건축적 질서를 상상하지만, 중심 없이 흩어진 이 선들은 형태로서의 공간이 아닌, 부재로서의 공간을 그린다. 이 회화는 선이 구조가 되려는 시도이자, 그 시도가 실패하거나 유예된 지점에서 탄생한 공간적 모순의 기록이다.

Architectural Void explores how line constructs and simultaneously dismantles architectural logic.
The overlapping and fractured forms evoke a city without a map, or the memory of structures no longer present.
Rather than defining space through form, the work renders space through absence—a void inscribed by architectural intent.

<Fragment of Object> condenses the residual matter of fragmented objects into the physical presence of line. These marks do not depict forms, but insistently evoke the memory and sensation of what has broken apart. Here, the line is not structure but trace—a remnant of being after collapse. Through line, I explore not the essence of objects, but the feeling of their absence.

In this work, the line is not treated as a structural element or a material skin. Instead, the line operates as a force that dismantles established forms, rupturing the visual logic of objects and allowing new sensations of being to emerge from the fragments. My concern is not with constructing boundaries, but with exploring how lines fragment, displace, and reconfigure the traces of what once was whole.

These lines collide, rupture, and reconnect—not to define, but to evoke the presence of something broken, unsettled, and unresolved. The line does not explain structure; it questions it, destabilizes it, and gives rise to a field of emergent perception. Through this process, I seek to render a space where existence is no longer complete, but suspended, where thought precedes form and perception takes shape in the act of disintegration.

<The Void>는 검정이라는 색을 매개로, 존재와 비존재 사이의 경계, 그리고 그 사이에서 감각되는 물성의 진동을 탐구한 작업이다. 나는 이 회화에서 색으로서의 블랙을 물리적인 표면 그 이상으로 접근한다. 반복적으로 물질을 쌓고 긁고 눌러가며, 시간의 층위가 겹쳐진 하나의 존재론적 표면을 구성해간다.

하이데거가 말한 “존재는 스스로를 은폐하며 드러난다”는 개념처럼, 이 화면은 무언가를 재현하려 하지 않지만, 침묵 속에서 감각되고 기억되는 어떤 존재의 형식을 천천히 드러낸다. 검정은 여기서 부재가 아니라, 형태 이전의 존재의 상태로 작동하며, 그것은 결코 완전히 드러나지 않기에 더욱 강하게 감각된다.

물질은 이 작업의 핵심이다. 나는 물질과 마주 앉아 그것의 저항을 느끼고, 반복을 통해 보이지 않는 리듬과 살아있는 표면을 만든다. 이 화면은 한순간의 이미지가 아니라, 시간과 감각, 육체와 물질이 교차하는 장소이다. 회화는 나에게 세계를 인식하는 방식이자, 존재 그 자체에 대한 조용한 질문이다.

<The Void> explores the boundary between being and non-being through the color black—revealing the vibrations of materiality that emerge in between. In this painting, black is not merely a surface or an absence; it is a color that holds weight, resistance, and memory. Through layering, scraping, and compressing, I build a surface where time itself accumulates as presence.

As Heidegger suggests, “Being reveals itself through concealment.” In this work, there is no need for representation—what matters is the slow emergence of presence through silence, tension, and touch. Black, in this context, is not void but a pre-formal state of being, something sensed rather than seen, something always on the threshold of appearing.

Materiality is central. My process engages with the resistance of materials—through repetition, gesture, and weight—until the surface begins to carry its own living rhythm. This painting is not a fixed image, but a site where time, perception, body, and matter intersect. Painting, for me, is not a depiction of the world but a quiet ontological inquiry into what it means to be.

하이데거가 말한 존재의 ‘현존재(Dasein)’는 시간 속에서 자기 자신을 드러내는 방식이며, 이 작업은 바로 그 드러남의 지층이 회화로 퇴적된 것이다.
들뢰즈의 반복과 차이의 이론에서처럼, 동일한 제스처의 반복은 다시 같은 것이 아니라, 차이를 응축하며 새로운 시간적 밀도를 생성한다.

이 작업은 말해지지 않은 구조, 인식되지 않은 질서에 대해 조용히 응시하며, 우리가 무엇을 보는가가 아니라, 어떻게 감각하는가를 묻는다.

이 작업은 선의 미니멀한 힘을 통해 공간의 잠재성, 건축적 상상력, 그리고 비가시적 리듬을 드러낸다.

The work “Spatial Syntax” begins with the proposition that a line is not merely a boundary or contour, but an active agent that generates and defines space. This sculptural structure consists of intersecting straight and curved lines that form an autonomous system within the forces of gravity and balance.
